In the News: A Taste of Sunnmore in Second Life – blog feature by Inara Pey, April 2023 Second Life Featured Destination
Project Description:
Sunnmore is my most ambitious project to date. My very first full sim build of my own (built on a homestead sim), it was inspired by the first life region which is located in Southern Norway. It is a place of unparalleled beauty where the northern lights soar across the sky – a place where the mountains and fjords meet the ocean. It is also the land of Friluftsliv.
Friluftsliv, loosely translated, means “open air life” or “free air life” and is a concept embraced by the country of Norway. Friluftsliv is described as meaning “the simple life” – a way of life that embraces nature and offers the possibility of rejuvenation and restoring balance among living things. It is about living in harmony with nature and returning to our true home. It is what inspired me and lived within me throughout this entire build.
Visitors to Sunnmore land on a ferry, which is setup to have just carried them to the main island. Sunnmore is made up of the main island and 3 other smaller islands intersected by fjords and surrounded by water. Once off the main island, the main mode of transportation is by water and visitors can kayak or take one of two different kind of smaller speed boats or inflatable boats.
After disembarking the ferry, visitors can explore the main island which consists of the Visitors Center and docks. They can continue down a worn road to the marine research area or they can choose to head up Slogen Mountain – the highest elevation of this build, where they will find a glamping dome with views of the stars and Northern Lights. There are also zip-lines which will take them back down to the marine research area or over to Lighthouse Island.
Lighthouse Island is one of three other islands and is home to moose, elk and brown bears as well as its namesake lighthouse and wind turbines. There are also beehives set up in a flower field with bees, butterflies and other pollinators flitting about them. From Lighthouse island, visitors can take a kayak or inflatable boat and continue exploring by water.
Also on Sunnmore is a second island that houses a boat repair dock and old fishing cabin. From this island visitors can take a kayak and visit the 3rd island which offers hot air balloon rides as well as a remote shoreside camping area.
Sunnmore was a March 2023 Destination Guide Editor Pick and a Second Life Featured Destination in April 2023.
